The UFC 226 fight card might have lost it’s original co-main event when UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway was pulled from his fight against Brian Ortega, but that doesn’t mean fans should cancel their plans to watch Saturday’s fight card. After all, the event still has a main event fight between heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic and light heavyweight kingpin Daniel Cormier. The heavyweight scrap between Francis Ngannou and Derrick Lewis has been elevated to co-headliner status.
UFC 226 takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and is part of International Fight Week.
Miocic’s heavyweight crown is on the line when he faces Cormier. Miocic has not lost since 2014. In his past six fights, the Ohio-born fighter has scored five knockouts. During that run he also won and defended the heavyweight title a UFC record three consecutive times. He’ll make it four straight with a win over Cormier.
Cormier began his fighting career as a heavyweight. He’s never tasted defeat in the weight class. Cormier’s last fight at heavyweight was his UFC 166 decision win over Roy Nelson.
In the co-main event, Ngannou looks to erase the memory of a lopsided loss to Miocic in his most recent bout. Lewis is coming off a third-round TKO win over Marcin Tybura.Before the fighters step into the octagon on Saturday, they will hit the scales. The ceremonial weigh-ins take place on Friday. The first fighter is set to hit the scale at 7 p.m. ET.

UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier had a scary fall Thursday following the conclusion of UFC 226’s pre-fight press conference at the Pearl at the Palms in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Cormier, who challenges Stipe Miocic for the heavyweight title in UFC 226’s main event, appeared to trip to the floor hard after standing from his seat. Cormier stayed down for several seconds until gingerly rising to his feet and limping backstage with the help of UFC security. “DC” then walked out to face off with Miocic following a tense few minutes.
UFC appears to have dodged a bullet Thursday just two days out from UFC 226 as the curse of International Fight Week continues to prove to be a very real thing.
Light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier tripped and fell awkwardly on a speaker as he stood up from the table following the close of the UFC 226 news conference. The 39-year-old Cormier, who will challenge for Stipe Miocic’s heavyweight title this weekend at T-Mobile Arena, then limped backstage.
